Andrea Zupancich

Longtime Northland senator Tom Bakk, who announced his retirement earlier this year, left an opening in District 3, which covers parts of Cook, Lake, Koochiching, Itasca and St Louis counties. As soon as his announcement hit, Republican Andrea Zupancich of Babbitt Mining City decided to run against Democrat Grant Hauschild as mayor – in what will likely determine whether Babbitt gets its pro-mining voice at the state capitol.

Zupancich of z’Up North Realty says voters in her region are concerned with health care and cost of living issues as well as environmental protection measures, including protecting Rainy River watershed that flows into Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness.

Hauschild and Zupancich found themselves at odds during WDSE’s MINE debate over how best to balance environmental protections with mining job needs. While Zupancich believes voters are ready for another Republican after Bakk, she relies heavily on anger over Supreme Court abortion ruling as her basis for her argument; on the other hand, Hauschild campaigned on his legislative experience and job need as his platform – something Zupancich does not support.

Both candidates are also seeking support from local labor and business groups, and will be featured in an hourlong special this evening on KAXE and WRPT at 7pm, where they’ll be interviewed by a panel of local experts and given time to answer any questions that come their way. For more information about that evening’s broadcast click here or watch on livestream; once posted it will also appear on our Facebook page so please share this important event with friends – thank you all for your help!
