Shaffer’s attorney, Mark Bell, declined to make a statement after the hearing; he has been fighting this case for months and plans on appealing the ruling.

Court records reveal that Shaffer admitted to sexually abusing and raping John Coltharp’s daughter in February as part of their betrothal process; as part of this examination he examined her genitals to ensure they were intact and examined their genitalia as part of that. As such he plead guilty to one count of first-degree felony rape of a minor and two second-degree counts of child abuse.

The judge sentenced him to 25 years to life for rape and 1 to 15 years for child abuse, as well as providing mental health treatment during his imprisonment period and permitting parole after serving 10 years.

Shaffer was raised in Ames, Iowa and graduated from Ames High School before attending Iowa Lakes Community College to earn a Summa Cum Laude degree in Auto Collision Repair program.
