New York maintains an extensive database of real estate licensees that allows users to search by name, license reference number or company. You can also determine whether their license is active or expired.

The Lookup service helps establish and uphold industry standards while serving as evidence in legal disputes or even helping prevent fraud.

License status

Licensing status of real estate agents is essential information for those buying or selling property. Mortgage lenders require this data when lending money, and other real estate professionals use this to verify a person’s background. Utilizing license lookup can help prevent scams or fraudulent behavior from occurring.

New York requires real estate agents to obtain a license in order to sell property within its borders. To become licensed agents in this state, one must be 18 or over with either a high school diploma or GED certificate and complete 77 hours of pre-licensing education and find a broker sponsor before taking and passing state approved exams with at least 70% scores – then applying to Department of State Division of Licensing Services for further approvals.

As well as checking license status, the eAccessNY real estate license search provides information about real estate professionals’ backgrounds. Search by person’s name, license number or company. Adding more criteria could unnecessarily narrow results, making it harder to locate the person.

To search for an individual, enter their full name into the first field and choose their license type/status from the drop-down menu before clicking ‘Search.’ Or alternatively you may opt to ‘Search by Name Only’ by providing their last name as you search criteria.

Once a real estate professional passes their exam and gets licensed, they must complete 22.5 hours of continuing education credits before renewing their license. CE classes can be taken online or over the phone; at minimum two hours must include agency training. In addition, three hours should be dedicated towards fair housing and implicit bias coursework.

Real estate professionals working in each state may require licenses as salespeople or brokers, with some states also having reciprocity agreements between states that make it easier for out-of-state brokers to obtain one. For more information about such arrangements, contact your state’s real estate department.
