Pat Garrett

Pat Garrett was an iconic Old West lawman, famous for killing Billy the Kid and dismantling cattle theft gangs in Lincoln County, New Mexico. Additionally he served as sheriff in Dona Ana and captain of the LS Texas Rangers; his life and relationships with leaders such as President Roosevelt demonstrated just how challenging reputation management and politics could be in this frontier environment.

In 1907, ranchers led by W. W. Cox and Jim Gililland convened at El Paso’s St. Regis hotel to devise a plan to dispose of Garrett. They offered Jim “Killer” Miller ten thousand dollars to kill Garrett; Carl Adamson would transport both. All conspirators would shoot Garrett at an agreed-upon spot in the desert; each taking responsibility for their part of the plot.

Though known for his reputation of outlaw killing, Garrett had many warm friends in Albuquerque who mourned his passing with profound sorrow. There have also been suggestions of more to the story than meets the eye and some conspiracy theories have surfaced since.
